Just over a year ago, you helped guide me on my path as I became a mother. Thank you for your wisdom & calming spirit, for your emotional support week after week through pregnancy, your physical support during the long hours of labour, and most of all, thank you for your faith in me and my abilities – even when I wasn’t sure of them myself. Not a day goes by where I’m not grateful for all you have done for our family.
Thank you Kim.
A year ago today you were very much my rock, helping me realize my own inner strength, helping me recognize a new intensity and kind of love with my husband.
Every year on this day, you will always be in my thoughts. Sending light and love your way
I was thinking about how nervous I was before Rowyn was born & remembering our conversation when I told you about all my concerns. It’s funny how all of that seems so far away now. I’m truly the happiest I’ve ever been. That’s so great to say!! I still give thanks every day for the wonderful experience we had bringing her into the world & the amazing role you played in all of that. Thank you for all you do. You have been a blessing to our family.
In January of 2010 my daughter was born. Our Doula, Kim Van Diest, arrived well beforehand to help us prepare mentally, emotionally, and physically for our planned natural birth. Kim came prepared with a lot of information and literature that helped us make strategic decisions to set us up for the success we so desired. Kim went over the birth plan we had written with my husband and I. I appreciate how Kim made my husband feel essential before and during the birth. I felt cared for during the whole process. We worked as a team using natural childbirth techniques to alleviate the discomfort of the contractions. I felt that Kim was highly supportive and encouraging, even at moments I was unsure of myself, her verbal affirmations kept me going without the need of an epidural or painkillers. Kim advocated for me in the birth room by pointing out to the delivery doctor that I had specified not to have an episiotomy. If Kim hadn’t spoken up, I would have felt the doctor didn’t respect my wishes outlined in my birth plan. Kim is professional and caring. She is responsive to the birth family’s wishes without being intrusive. I am very thankful that Kim assisted our birth, I truly believe that the best method of natural childbirth is with a Doula. I would recommend Kim to anyone wishing to have a natural childbirth.

On June 11 my husband and I welcomed a beautiful baby boy into our lives. Also there to welcome him that morning was our doula Kim. She made the experience so much more rewarding by helping with the labour process. In no way did she take the place of my husband or my mom, who was also in the labour room, instead she provided helpful guidance and support. At one point I was ready to give up and tell all the doctors and nurses to go somewhere not nice. I wasn’t feeling overly polite at that point. Kim took charge of the room, nicely asked everyone to leave except my husband and I, and talked me through my issues. She helped me remember what my goal was and how wonderful the experience was. It was the best and it helped me get through a rough spot. After that the labour went much better and Kim was amazing in helping me deal with the pain and everything else. I will NEVER give birth without her in the future, she is an amazing doula and an amazing person.

My husband and I feel so blessed to have had Kim as part of our birth team. Not only was she a constant source of support for me, but for my husband as well. As first time parents, we were both anxious about the labour and delivery, as we didn’t really know what to expect or how to prepare. What we did know is that we wanted our experience to be as natural as possible, so that we could really be present in the moment and witness the miracle of our first child being born. That is what brought us to Kim.
Kim is a vast source of knowledge. She knows so much about labour and delivery – more than any book or class can teach you. With Kim’s help, we came up with a birth plan and discussed any complications that could arise during the labour and delivery. Kim made herself available to me during the entire prenatal period in case I had questions, worries or just wanted to talk. In fact, she treated me like you would treat a good friend. Both my husband and I felt completely comfortable with her.
Kim has so many tricks up her sleeve when it comes to dealing with pain and discomfort. Her massage and yoga positions really helped me when I was feeling uncomfortable in the third trimester. She also taught me some visualization and meditation techniques to help prepare for and cope with the labour and delivery. Her methods of dealing with labour pains were instrumental in helping me make it through the delivery without the need for pain medication. Even though we had many unforeseen complications during our labour and delivery, Kim was there for us every step of the way. Things may not have gone exactly according to plan, but we still got exactly what we wanted – a beautiful, healthy baby.
It seems that everyone has a different experience when it comes to labour and delivery. But after having swapped stories with friends and family (some who used pain medication during labour and delivery and some who didn’t), my experience seems to have been more positive than anyone else that I have talked to. At the time I didn’t know anyone who had used the help of a birth doula, but it was the single best decision we made in preparing for the birth of our child. I would highly recommend Kim to anyone, first time parent or not.
